Specialized Academic Instruction Specialized academic instruction is available to students who are eligible to receive an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Students may require accommodations and or modifications to access their general education curriculum. At Sonora High School, Specialized Academic Instruction may take place in the following formats: - Small group/individualized instruction - collaborative/co-taught classes with general education teachers - regular consultation with students to monitor progress Individual and small group instruction typically takes place in a classroom setting with a higher staff to student ratio than most general education classes. Instructional content may range from basic study skill development to modified core curriculum. Collaborative/co-taught classes provide additional support for students. Students receive instruction in the general education classroom with their peers, and a special education teacher and or instructional aide may provide additional resources and support within this environment. In collaborative classes, the special education teacher may also co-teach with the general education teacher, working with him or her to provide appropriate accommodations and modifications for each student, using varied research based methodologies and strategies to ensure optimal acquisition of instructional content. Consultation services are also available when appropriate as a form of specialized academic instruction. Students receive all their core instruction from the general education curriculum, but receive special education support through regular progress monitoring. Special education staff may also provide supplemental instruction or materials to support the student in their general education core classes.
